Talking Points Watch: Team Trump’s repeated claims that first foreign trip “historic”

Update: Added statements by President Trump from his weekly address.

A collection of statements by Rex Tillerson and Sean Spicer characterizing President Trump’s recent trip, especially to Saudi Arabia, as “historic.”

I am thrilled to be back in the United States after our first historic foreign trip.

Our first foreign trip was full of historic and unprecedented achievements. Joined by many old and new friends, we have paved the way for the new era of cooperation – one that calls upon each nation to take more responsibility to bring peace to their people.

In Saudi Arabia, I was honored to participate in a historic summit with the leaders of more than 50 Muslim and Arab nations, where King Salman and many other leaders expressed their desire to take on a greater role in defeating terrorists who murder innocents of all faiths.

As Adel just described it, today truly is a historic moment in U.S.-Saudi relations.

Today we announced 23 foreign investment export licenses leading to upwards of more than $350 billion of historic direct investment.

We’ve had a really productive day today, a truly historic day in this relationship.

Well, thank you very much as well, Your Excellency, and I think it was, in many respects, a truly historic event this afternoon, this Arab Islamic American Summit. And first, I want to congratulate the King, first for convening such a historic event, but also on his remarks.

So I think it was a historic event today.

Well, Chris, I think it is historic, what’s happening here in Riyadh under the King’s leadership and his convening of the GCC Council this morning.

Well, Chris, I think all you have to do is watch the footage of your own coverage of the President on this historic visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which of course now are convening nations from throughout the region, including Africa.

Interview With Chris Wallace of Fox News Sunday, May 21, 2017

I want to begin by recapping the incredible, historic trip that the President and the First Lady have just concluded, because it truly was an extraordinary week for America and our people.

The President’s address to the leaders of more than 50 Arab and Muslim nations was a historic turning point that people will be talking about for many years to come.

The President’s historic speech was met with near universal praise.  Former CIA Director Jim Woolsey called it “a courageous speech.”  Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said in The Washington Post that we have to look back decades to “find a comparably dramatic moment in the history of U.S. foreign policy.”

We cannot overlook the significance of so many leaders of Muslim countries coming together to recognize the need to fight extremists.  This was a historic event in that regard alone.

The visit also included historic economic development deals for the United States, totaling well over half a trillion dollars and the creation of tens of thousands of American jobs.

This was an extraordinarily successful and historic nine-day trip the President took.  He accomplished the return of a strong America to international affairs, rallied civilized nations of the world against terrorism, took real steps towards peace in the Middle East, and renewed our alliances on the basis of both shared interest and shared burdens.
